EWDNot all wishes should come true.

Master storyteller Mary Monroe begins her Lonely Heart, Deadly Heart series with a page-turning tale of seduction and shocking surprises, as two unhappy women fulfill their every erotic dream—and find a desire that kills…

As teenagers, best friends Lola Poole and Joan Procter concocted a scheme to escape their boredom, pass the time between boyfriends—and bring in some money. It all started when they got in the habit of corresponding with lonely, unsuspecting—and generous—older men. In return for their “love letters,” the teens were rewarded with checks. The fun only ended when their swindle nearly got them killed. Now they’re grown, but they’re still longing for every woman’s dream of love and excitement…

Joan is unhappily married, while Lola is done with putting her life on hold for her selfish relatives’ demands. As girls they were looking for money, but as women they have other needs they want satisfied. And thanks to online dating and a parade of lovers, they’re getting all the sexy fun they missed out on. It’s a downright addictive game. But games can’t last forever—and someone has to lose…

REVIEW:

In the beginning of friendship, Joan and Lola have each others back.  They are there for one another through thick and thin.  Joan is all about the come up.  Living with her large family and sharing a room with her cousin Too Sweet, Joan stumbles upon and advertisement in the back of her cousins romance magazines.  The Lonely Hearts club advertises penpal relationships with people across the world.  After spending a semester writing penpals for a class project, Joan thinks this is the way to put some extra money in her pocket over the summer and have a little harmless fun.  Joan convinces Lola to join in and soon the duo are writing a numerous amount of men and getting money in return.  All is well in their little scheme until a Lonely Wife shows up to set the record straight.

After that debacle, you’d think the young adults have learned their lesson…hmm well

Flash Forward, present day

Lola is still living in turmoil dealing with her stepmother Bertha and the dying wish she made to her father.  Bertha never, never, and did I say never lets her forget her promise.  Anytime she gets close to a life of her own, Bertha concocts something to derail it.  Lola’s life is nothing like she imagined.  She’s lonely and looking for love in all the wrong places.

Unhappily married and a mother, Joan is disappointed with the way her life went after she married Reed.  Although he provides everything she needs, he’s controlling and lacks the skills in the bedroom to keep Joan occupied.  Joan’s sexual frustration leads her to the internet.  After using several sites for random hook-ups Joan discovers Discreet Encounters.  And after a short while, she introduces Lola to the site as well.  And the two are back on a rollercoaster ride of thrills and sex…But you’ve got to be careful, everyone on the net isn’t whom they are presumed to be.

Calvin Ramsey, the sexy truck driver, and former Marine makes his introduction late in the book but the thrill doesn’t slow down it kicks into overdrive.

I really enjoyed reading this book, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where the series goes from here.  It definitely makes you think twice about hooking up via the net!

REVIEW:

WomanIsh ~~ Defined by Alice Walker as the opposite of girlish…being a grown up…

WomanIsh is a collection of stories that center around women and the lives they chose.  The decisions each of them have to make and live with.  All of the stories, much like the decision they each have to make revolve around the man in their life. Each story is different and shares the encounter with the author, much like an intervention or session with Dr. Phil, Oprah or Iyanla Vanzant.  WomanIsh is the cause, the effect, and the solution.  WomanIsh is the making of a decision, the wavering, and the standing your ground of consciousness.  WomanIsh is taking the very thing you desire and making it yours, the dealing with the consequences.  That is WomanIsh.

The Stories:

There are several stories encased in this book, I’ll share a few that stuck with me.

Her UnEmpowerment:  Betta’s story

Out of the frying pan and into the fire!  Betta at the age of 39 became involved with a man, whom at the time she didn’t know was married, but violent nonetheless.  Roy was everything Betta thought she wanted, he took her out, provided, and sexed her on the regular.  What she didn’t expect were the beatings.  After an encounter with John, Betta assumed she’d found better.  John treated her like she wanted and desired to be treated until she stepped out of line.  Just like the other old saying goes, the grass ain’t always greener on the other side.  However if you take care of it by any means necessary, your grass can flourish.  It’s never too late to live a life without pain.

When I married…I didn’t love him: Mary’s story

There are hundreds of reason women and men choose to marry.  The #1 reason often being “in love”.  Mary’s choice was more about the bigger picture.  Marriage takes more than undying love to sustain them and Mary felt the swooning or big fall wasn’t it.  After 35 years of marriage, Mary loved her husband just as much as he loved her.  Hot relations come and go but a marriage of sustenance endures for a lifetime.

It’s my turn…damn the rest:  Kenya’s Story

Reading Kenya’s story, had me singing “I ain’t saying she’s a gold digger…” Kenya at best was ambitious and goal oriented, however, her darker side craved the excitement derived from obtaining different men.  Kenya married George, a man she felt was beneath her, he was too meek, too soft-spoken, too sweet.  He wasn’t hard nor a thug.  He didn’t strive for more than what he had and was happy with that.  After Kenya achieves her goal of becoming a P.A. her itch returns.  Too little, too late! Kenya learns the lesson.

I loved men before I changed: Lena’s story

This story was different.  Lena was married for years her husband.  However at the turning point of life, she found herself attracted to another.  Hurting her husband, Aaron was never intentional for Lena.  She just wanted to live her life.

The common thread in all the stories, is Women, doing Womanish things.  Standing by their decisions, good bad or indifferent.  I would recommend this book and the lessons it contains.  4.5 Stars

shftc“A captivating tale to savor about a woman whose buried past threatens her picture perfect family life. Felicia is a wonderfully flawed, compelling main character, one who has stayed with me long after I finished the book. A winning novel from a writer to watch.” -Benilde Little, bestselling author

Felicia Lyons, a stressed out stay-at-home mom, struggles to sprint ahead of the demands of motherhood while her husband spends long days at the office. Felicia taps, utters mantra, and breathes her way through most situations, but on some days, like when the children won’t stop screaming her name or arguing over toy trucks and pretzel sticks, she wonders what it would be like to get in her car and drive away.

Then one evening the telephone rings, and in a split second the harried mother’s innocent fantasy becomes a hellish reality. The call pulls her back into a life she’d rather forget. Felicia hasn’t been completely honest about her upbringing, and her deception forces her return to the Philadelphia of her childhood, where she must confront the family demons and long buried secrets she thought she had left behind.

From a phenomenal fresh voice in fiction, comes the compelling story of what happens when the dream falls apart. Sadeqa Johnson’s Second House from the Corner is an unforgettable tale of love, loss, rediscovery, and the growing pains of marriage.

REVIEW:

Felecia Lyon Haynes is a married, stay at home Mother of three and part-time actress.  The book starts off with a steady pace, of Felecia going through the motions with her life and family.  Many times she seems overwhelmed and wishing for a departure from the life she has.  When she rushes out one afternoon to the movies, her life takes the turn she wasn’t expecting.

Although Felecia loves her family and life she has, being a stay at home mom has gotten mundane and the voices in Felecia’s head often tell her she’s not doing enough or are unworthy to do more.  Her husband Preston is controlling.  His love for her will be tested in ways neither of them expected.

After a strange unexpected phone call, Felecia is assailed with the past she longed to forget.  The caller brought about memories Felecia never disclosed to her husband nor anyone else in her current circle.

This book left me with many questions, is love stronger than the past.  Should a wife disclose everything she’s ever done to her husband?  Should the husband be able to forgive transgressions that happened before him?  Did Felecia make the best decisions when it came to her husband, the children, her past?  Although most of these questions were answered in the story-telling it did spark some deep thought.  I enjoyed the book, I wanted to scream at points and thought girl, you better not let that ish happen!  I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.

51Pi4UgC+-LThis stunning new novel from Diane McKinney-Whetstone, nationally bestselling author of Tumbling, begins in the chaotic backstreets of post–Civil War Philadelphia as a young black woman gives birth to a child fathered by her wealthy white employer.

In a city riven by racial tension, the father’s transgression is unforgivable. He has already arranged to take the baby, so it falls to Sylvia, the midwife’s teenage apprentice, to tell Meda that her child is dead—a lie that will define the course of both women’s lives. A devastated Meda dedicates herself to working in an orphanage and becomes a surrogate mother to two white boys; while Sylvia, fueled by her guilt, throws herself into her nursing studies and finds a post at the Lazaretto, the country’s first quarantine hospital, situated near the Delaware River, just south of Philadelphia.

The Lazaretto is a crucible of life and death; sick passengers and corpses are quarantined here, but this is also the place where immigrants take their first steps toward the American dream. The live-in staff are mostly black Philadelphians, and when two of them arrange to marry, the city’s black community prepares for a party on its grounds. But the celebration is plunged into chaos when gunshots ring out across the river.

As Sylvia races to save the victim, the fates of Meda’s beloved orphans also converge on the Lazaretto. Long ago, one “brother” committed an unthinkable act to protect the other, sparking a chain of events that now puts the Lazaretto on lockdown. Here conflicts escalate, lies collapse and secrets begin to surface; like dead men rising, past sins cannot be contained.

REVIEW:

This book starts off with the introduction of young Meda’s first encounter with Sylvia.  Set in the post-civil war era, 40’s-50’s.  Meda like many during that time loved the President Abraham Lincoln.  On the night of his assassination, Meda is taken to a midwife Dr. Miss, to terminate a pregnancy which she has hidden.  However the arrival is far too late, and instead of a termination, there will be a delivery.  Sylvia is the apprentice nurse to Dr. Miss.  This night would be her first time assisting in childbirth.  She’s as excited as she is scared.  The event and secrets changed the life of both women, forever.

After the assassination of Lincoln, and the unfortunate event of her childbirth, Meda is sent to the orphanage to help overcome her grief.  There she encounters the two male infants that have been sent there to live.  Having just given birth, Meda is still lactating and becomes attached to the two boys.  She subsequently named them after the President.  Linc and Bram are brothers, though not biological but in every other sense of the word.

photography civil war

The lives of Linc and Bram consume the first half of this book.  Their bond is forever solidified with Meda and although it’s never really said, they love her like their own Mother.  Linc and Bram continue to live in the orphanage with weekend visits to see Meda, until the leadership at the orphanage changes hands.  One night a tragic event changes the lives of Linc and Bram forever.

The second half of the book finally gets to the quarantine station The Lazaretto.  The Lazaretto sits outside of Philadelphia and houses many who live and work the hospital that clears the entry of ships and passengers before entering the country.  On the Lazaretto, the tone changes, there’s a racial attack, murder, drugs, hate, love and of course drama.  The characters become more lively and the anticipation of actions are increased.

This was the first book I read by the author.  I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story, however, the ending was a bit disappointing for me, hence the 4.5 stars.  I look forward to reading more and I also think that Sylvia could have a book of her own.

51z669Ii3ZL._SX302_BO1,204,203,200_.jpgWhen struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh receives an offer of partnership from a wealthy aristocrat, he suspects something’s amiss. But when he meets the hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York, he is certain. For York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet. Nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York has his own reasons for wanting to traverse the powerful Mississippi. And they are to be none of Marsh’s concern – no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious his actions may prove.

Marsh meant to turn down York’s offer. It was too full of secrets that spelled danger. But the promise of both gold and a grand new boat that could make history crushed his resolve – coupled with the terrible force of York’s mesmerizing gaze. Not until the maiden voyage of his new sidewheelerFevre Dream would Marsh realize he had joined a mission both more sinister, and perhaps more noble, than his most fantastic nightmare…and mankind’s most impossible dream. Here is the spellbinding tale of a vampire’s quest to unite his race with humanity, of a garrulous riverman’s dream of immortality, and of the undying legends of the steamboat era and a majestic, ancient river.

movies reactions scared screaming yelling

Set in the 1850’s Joshua York is soul survivor of his family.  Born of a race of men who ‘suffer’ the blood thirst, York has created an elixir that cures, the monthly thirst for fresh blood.  Seeking to find the rest of his kind, Joshua sets off on a journey along the Mississippi River that starts with the meeting between him and Abner Marsh.

Abner Marsh is a steamboatman.    He loves the river and has spent his entire life on it.  After losing most of his fleet and stacking a huge debt, Marsh believes his dream may never come true.  That is until he meets Joshua York.

The duo strike a deal to build one of the largest steamboats the Mississippi has ever seen at that time.  A huge boat with room for cargo, passengers and speed; decked out in an array of silver, blue, and mirrors.  The Fevre Dream is born and the horrific adventure begins.

Soon after setting sail on the maiden voyage, Marsh realizes that his partner and co-captain is a bit different.  The strange hours, the solitary trips to land, and his aversion to daylight propel Marsh to break his no-questions stance with York.  After an act of prowling through York’s cabin, a gentleman’s confrontation ensues.  York unveils his truth the Marsh.  Marsh, in turn, accepts his culpability and the duo’s bond is stronger.

When  Damon Julian and his lapdog Sour Billy Tipton enter the scene, everything changes.  York realizes he’s not the true BloodMaster and is forced to surrender to Damon.

Abner Marsh is Ride or Die.  Even after losing his dream boat, and nearly his life, Marsh is still loyal to York.  His determination and chase to save his friend and boat, give the crusty uncouth man a heart of a lion.  He’s willing and ready to face off with the vilest creature he’s ever seen, all in the name of loyalty.

While I generally don’t review the audiobooks, I listen to on a daily basis, I found this one quite interesting.  The narration and language fit the era. The secondary characters were also strong and memorable. This was my first from George R. R. Martin, but it won’t be the last.  Five stars!

REVIEW:

Before I tell you how I feel about this book, let’s first talk about the cover and title.  I posted the book on social media and immediately got inboxes, text, and emails about it.  The title is very suggestive and a phrase that men use when trying to pick up a woman.  I personally find it a bit offensive, for a stranger to ask me something like that and quite often delete them from my social media.  Shock value has pros and cons.  The same way it can attract certain readers, it also turns other potential readers away.  Books are judged by their covers while some may think this cover is good, maybe even great most will turn it away. When you are publishing your book and designing your covers, think about the main target audience.  Would they like to be seen reading your book in public?  Does it have mass market appeal?  My two cents: Be wise in your choice, it could mean more or fewer dollars in your bank!

Girl-cation: A vacation with our girls, whether from college, work or anywhere we’ve made a connection. No husbands, boyfriends, or children allowed. Our right to walk away for a few days and just be!

Tay, Roxy, and Karen all decided it was time for a girl-cation and Miami was the place to be!  Tay, the single and loving it chick spent her days partying and looking for the next cum-up.  Roxy is stuck in a three-year relationship warp with Marcus. She doubts it’s going anywhere.  After a blow up with her man sends her on girl-cation with teaching him a lesson in mind.  Karen is happily married to Keith, who’s not feeling the whole trip, especially with Tay.

These ladies must’ve forgotten that only what happens in VEGAS stays in VEGAS.  Miami is another world and what happens there could wind up front page news.

There’s much more that could be said about this book, but it would give away too much.  So I’ll wrap up this review by saying; if the author chose to retitle and recover this novella he could reach a higher audience.  This is a story that’s urban, yes but it’s also contemporary and dramatic.  While there are very sexual scenes it’s not an overly erotic book.  I can only recommend it to people who are willing to look past the current cover and see the world trapped between it.

⚾️ Don’t judge someone just because they sin differently than you do❣️

Whew…whew! Where do I begin!! This book starts out with the woman-child Cheryl Blanton.  Struggling with an addicted Mother, Cheryl is forced to do what she has to do in order to survive.  Her struggle leads her to a man that changes her life…

Randall Alston is a young country boy hoping to make it into the big leagues of Baseball.  After being invited to a major party by one of the New York Yankee’s scouts, Randy first encounters Cheryl.  Seeing him beyond the bad hair, pimply face and extreme southern drawl, Cheryl isn’t  initially attracted to Randy.  However after a night of unbridled passion, Randy is smitten and Cheryl isn’t that far behind.

Life for Randy quickly changes after signing a major contract to play for the New York Yankees… (Who knew baseball was so exciting!)  The duo marries and quickly become the IT couple of major baseball.

Sexy Sanchez is living her life like it’s golden…well at least in her mind it is.  Sexy moves to the beat of her own drum.  Her goal, to seduce and take other women’s men.  There’s no man that won’t succumb to her feminine wiles.  She uses exactly what she has to get what she wants, and right now she wants Randy Alston.

As this book plays out, the drama and scandal that unfold will leave you breathless.  These women are not into playing fair, they are only playing for keeps.  Just like the game of baseball, though, after three strikes…your OUT!  The question is who’s gonna be on the outs?   Sexy or Cheryl?   Although I really enjoyed this book and recommend it, the ending left too many open ends.  I hope there is a sequel to follow soon.
