12418839_951675741580985_4086532033802960356_oWhat you don’t know can kill you. A wave of suicidal behavior has gripped the nation with no concern for race, gender, or age. Many think it’s just a trend, but inspirational singer Candace Tremont knows better. Since witnessing the suicide of her husband five years prior, she’s committed her life to fighting the spirit of depression. Unfortunately, suicidal thoughts and dreams also plague her mind, making the war more personal than anyone around her realizes. Unfulfilled with periodic and low-paying gigs, Candace yearns for an opportunity to touch more lives. Her prayers are answered—or so it seems—when she is offered a temporary job at Ontario Correctional Facility, performing for suicidal female inmates. A surge of self-harming behaviors has put the facility at risk for shut down, and Candace’s music might be the staff’s final hope of keeping their jobs. In addition to a substantial fee, Candace is given the assistance of the handsome Julius Barnes, one of the prison’s psychologists who believes her music can help reduce the lethal behaviors of the incarcerated population. However, Apollius, a fallen angel committed to destruction, has other ideas for the inmates, and won’t give up his control over these women so easily. A supernatural battle of epic proportions has ignited in Upstate New York, and the consequences could be fatal. Are Candace’s songs of faith powerful enough to save the lives of the inmates and keep the facility from closing down indefinitely? Or will her interference with Apollius’ plan make her the next target?

REVIEW:

Following the death of her husband, Candace Tremont felt her life was in shambles.  Knowing she’d never lived to her full potential during her marriage, Candace finds new purpose after death.  Julius Barnes can’t believe that Letizia is gone, by suicide no less.  At the funeral of his childhood friend and celebrity, Julius lays eyes on Candace whom he hasn’t seen in years.  After hearing her singing the most tranquil, spirit lifting words he’s ever heard, Julius feels a peace beyond understanding.

Either through sheer coincidence or divine interaction that their paths crossed Candace and Julius lives both changes after that chance meeting.  Back at OCF, Julius’ job as Psychologist is on shaky ground after the double suicide of two inmates within the same hour.  Feeling as his back is against the wall, Julius urges his supervisor to take on a daring and drastic therapeutic session for group therapy.

Dark forces are working hard to destroy the lives of inmates at OCF, will their plan succeed and successful close the doors to the facility?  Apollius’ is confident in his conniving and views his imminent success as the gateway to greater deeds in the underworld.

It is my whole hearted opinion that the main goal of any author is to have their work reach out and touch the reader in profound ways.  Although this is a fictional novel, the depths of the words and meaning goes far beyond mere fiction.  This author has undertaken a subject matter that affects millions of people daily.  Depression is a common but serious mood disorder.  Combining spirituality and music therapy to combat the stronghold of depression brings this fictional piece to reality.   This book evokes robust reactions at various times while holding the you captive with each passionate stroke of her pen.

While I highly recommend this book, I must include this disclaimer:  this book is highly suggestive.  The language while not vulgar nor overbearing with Christianity does deal with the spiritual warfare of souls. Most all religions believe in the forces of good and evil and that spirits can dwell in beings and words.

If you are dealing with depression, there is HELP.  You don’t have to go through it alone. http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/

REVIEW:

Where do I begin, when the previous book left off, King Kochese and Jasmine were discovered to be the dreaded insane Monopoly Killers.  The most deadly duo, leaving a gruesome body count spread like the game.  I’ll never look at the game the same… Fast forward, King is on the run and Jasmine is locked away tight in an insane asylum.

Torn between her job and her only family left, Monica Deitrich still reaches out to her sister on a regular basis.  However, the person staring back at her is no longer the little innocent girl.  Jasmine, pregnant and cuffed to a hospital bed, hates her sister with a passion.  Her loyalty lies with King Kochese.

The action and page turning plot of this book is not for the faint of heart.  I highly recommend this series, the author has constructed a plot of mayhem and murder that is surely a classic tale of horror.

REVIEW:   This is the last book in the trilogy Woman at the Top of the Stairs.  When we left off in book two, Gina had been assaulted by former husband Mac.  The women of her circle; Zenobia, Yvette and Ashleigh were still dealing with their own individual battles.

Before diving deep into this book, what I didn’t expect in the least little bit, took place.  We’re not only caught up on the former characters from previous books but also introduced to a new set of characters.  Freedom and Brock bring about a new look into the old adage, “Same sex, same problems.”  Yet, that’s not where the story ends.  Mac is a man who believes he can do whatever he likes whenever he likes.

There is so much going on in this wicked thriller, confessions, jealousy, obsession and more.

In an effort to leave no stone unturned, the author brought about unpredictable alliances.  The pages in this gruesome story shed some details that would leave the faint of heart, shaking in their boots. With the exception of the new characters introduced, closure of the life of the Woman still at the top of the stairs was heartbreaking and triumphant.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others.

☕️ Murder in the Aisles by Olivia Hill ☕️

Murderous intent is no match for killer intellect accessorized with stiletto heels.

A Felicia Swift Mystery, Book 1

If there’s one thing Felicia Swift likes more than sex, it’s books. But her dream job at the Library of Congress takes a macabre turn when she finds a linguistics specialist lying dead between his least favorite subjects: Anthropology and Astrophysics.

Worse, the utterly sexy detective seems to have his eyes on Felicia’s curves more than the evidence, which she is convinced points at the wrong man. And she plans to convince him of just that—right after he buys her an apple martini.

Mark Rizzo plans to wrap up this investigation as quickly as possible. Until he realizes the witness isn’t some dumpy, wizened librarian, but a researcher with endless legs, bottomless intellect, and a bulldog determination to complicate this open-and-shut case all to hell.

As Felicia and Rizzo dig closer to the truth, the real culprit gets jittery enough to try something desperate. Leaving Felicia to wonder if their investigation will lead them down the aisle of no return.

Warning: Contains a jaded detective with more scuffs, scrapes, and scars than a well-loved pair of Timberlands. Plus a more fashion-forward (and probably better smelling) sleuth than Sherlock Holmes who’s as picky about her lovers as she is about her shoes—and make no mistake, she’s had plenty of both.

But it’s Clara’s secret prayer room, with its walls covered in requests and answers, that has Elizabeth most intrigued . . . even if she’s not ready to take Clara’s suggestion that she create a prayer room of her own. As tensions at home escalate, though, Elizabeth begins to realize that her family is worth fighting for, and she can’t win this battle on her own. Domestic violence is an unfortunate part of many relationships today. Every year more than 1.5 million women are made victims of this relational epidemic. Has domestic violence become so commonplace that it is no longer considered a problem? Have we grown so accustomed to seeing and hearing about it that we not only turn a blind eye but a deaf ear as well? Meet Gina. She is the woman at the top of the stairs who repeatedly hears the cries and screams of the woman who lives below her as she is constantly victimized at the hands of her partner. Bearing witness to Zenobia’s pain reminds Gina of the abusive life she narrowly escaped from. But Gina can’t get away from the nightmares of her past; the tumultuous reminders of how she was battered and nearly broken at the hands of her contemptuous and menacing husband. Will Gina be like the many and turn her back on Zenobia, leaving her to fend for herself, or will she build an alliance with Zenobia to end her suffering once and for all? Find out in this compelling novel, Woman at the Top of the Stairs.

REVIEW:

♦️Nearly one in four women in the United States reports experiencing violence by a current or former spouse or boyfriend at some point in her life.

What would you do if every night you heard the screams and whimpering cries from your neighbor’s apartment?  Would you step in and offer help or the number to the nearest shelter?  Or would you sit idly by hoping that it subsides?  This is the beginning of Gina’s story.  As an RN in the local  ER Gina has seen many victims of domestic violence come and go.  As hard as she tries to mind her own business, the pain etched in Zenobia’s face bothers her and awakens her hidden darkness as well.  The introduction of Zenobia is shocking to say the least.  After a knock-down, drag-out fight between Zenobia and Percy, her boyfriend; she’s heard screaming at the police to not take him in for the obvious domestic abuse.  This is not as uncommon as you would think, women who are abused often become immune to the actual acts perpetrated against them.  They begin to believe that without violence there is no love. Zenobia is no different.

tumblr_lo1741Jfti1qdtji3o1_500 Plot Twist….

In my mind, I hear the music from When a woman’s fed up….There ain’t nothing you can do about it.  Once the tables were turned and Zenobia finally had enough, her life and Gina’s life changes drastically.  There’s so much more I want to say but to avoid filling this with spoilers, I’m going to wrap this up.  This psychological thriller is more than an expose on domestic violence.  It gives you a glimpse of vengeance taking on a life of its on.  You’ll need to add this one to your reading list to find out, will there be any relief for the Woman at the top of the Stairs.

🕵 The Grownup by Gillian Flynn 👀

518F+go8wYL._SX312_BO1,204,203,200_SYNOPSIS:

Gillian Flynn’s Edgar Award-winning homage to the classic ghost story, published for the first time as a standalone

A canny young woman is struggling to survive by perpetrating various levels of mostly harmless fraud. On a rainy April morning, she is reading auras at Spiritual Palms when Susan Burke walks in. A keen observer of human behavior, our unnamed narrator immediately diagnoses beautiful, rich Susan as an unhappy woman eager to give her lovely life a drama injection. However, when the “psychic” visits the eerie Victorian home that has been the source of Susan’s terror and grief, she realizes she may not have to pretend to believe in ghosts anymore. Miles, Susan’s teenage stepson, doesn’t help matters with his disturbing manner and grisly imagination. The three are soon locked in a chilling battle to discover where the evil truly lurks and what, if anything, can be done to escape it.

“The Grownup,” which originally appeared as “What Do You Do?” in George R. R. Martin’s Rogues anthology, proves once again that Gillian Flynn is one of the world’s most original and skilled voices in fiction.

REVIEW:

My first thought after reading this story…WTF did I just read?  Insert loud laughing out loud here!  But seriously, I read this book in under an hour but I’ve been sitting staring at the actual book for about 2 hours.

The protagonist starts out telling, in graphic detail her life and current job as a “customer service” at Spiritual Palms (good name play)  which is a polite way of saying it, to her present position as clairvoyant/ house cleaner.  During her time as a clairvoyant is when she meets Susan Burke.  Susan is a fixer, yet she can’t seem to fix her problem with her stepson Miles or her absentee husband.  Insert gaping hole and a few plot twist.  When the protagonists finds herself face to face alone with the antagonist stepson, the story final took a turn for the better.  But that was short lived.  The ending of the book comes with varied twists and a cliffhanger (which I absolutely hate).

The book told in 1st person  and present tense is not an easy task for any author to pull off.  However, Flynn seems to do it quite well.   Okay back to the book, the opening line is what seized me.  Most readers will give you ten pages, in those ten pages  you must set the scene, introduce a primary character and or  problem.  Flynn did that in the first two sentences.  Now I must admit, I’ve never read a Gillian Flynn book until now.  It’s an acquired taste.  Overall this was a decent story, scary not at all, a mind fuck definitely!
